MIKE'S STOP PUPPY MILLS SOAPBOX

Puppy Mills, unfortunately, have been around about as long as people have wanted to "BUY" that cute little doggie in the window. But, with the new "awakening" that Dateline has given to this cause, the public has the information, even though everyone seems to turn their head the other way, to be able to try and get these places closed permanently once and for all. Granted, this is not going to be simply an overnight, or even a yearly achievement but, if we don't start now, it will never end! It really pains me to hear about these places, with their "We're not doing anything wrong" attitude, they know exactly what they are doing! Of course, they figure that no one could really find out the truth about them. It saddens me that in this society, the more money you have, the more you can get away with. That's the way it's been for quite a while now. No one seems to have any moral conscience any more, especially those who get into any governmental agencies. I guess that died back in the 60's somewhere. These living conditions under which these poor animals are forced to endure sicken me. Then, when they become "not profitable" they are thrown away like a piece of garbage. There are so many animals in shelters that aren't adopted out even though some of them are purebreds too! In Crescent City, in 1999 alone 849 dogs were euthanized, and we are only a population of just over 8,000. This is quite a few animals for such a small population. I guess a lot of people think that a pregnant animal is "cute, makes them mellow, and various other fairy tales". Then, when they can't adopt the extras out they "have" to spread them around town or else give them to the pound. Well, you know, "someone" will pick them up! People should think of this before it's entirely too late. Another reason I am such a firm believer in the spay/neuter movement. If you are interested I urge you to get involved in your own community, find out what is being done about this practice, and, if you like, to join the "Stop Puppy Mills Now!" webring.
